Raw Food Diet

Updated: Apr 13

Our first experience with raw food was when I, Amber was growing up. My parents had a golden retriever who had a golf-ball-sized tumor form on the top of his head. When they took him to the vet, they were told that it was not operable and there was nothing that they could do. So, they went home discouraged and began researching. It was then that they read about the raw food diet for animals. They decided to try it, after all, what was there to lose? As they started feeding him on this new diet, his tumor began to shrink. It continued to shrink, until it went away completely. He had another scan and it was gone. It was then, that we all became believers in the raw food diet.

There are many benefits to the raw food diet:

  • Improved Digestion

  • Stronger Immune System

  • Healthier Skin and Coat

  • Decreased Allergies and Sensitivities

  • Better Dental Health (Cleaner Teeth and Better Breath)

  • Improved Energy

  • Emotional and Mental Stability

  • Smaller Stools with Less Odor

  • Weight Management

  • Improved Muscle Tone

  • Better performance for show or working dogs

Here are some other articles on the topic of raw food. There are also numerous books written on this topic:

When giving veggies, lightly steaming them first helps with digestion. Meat is best given raw. Grain-free or low grain diet is beneficial.

Foods that are toxic to dogs: (Experts disagree on this list, so check with your veterinarian to find out more):

  • Chocolate

  • Apple Seeds

  • Raisins and grapes

  • Currants

  • Alcohol

  • Macadamia nuts

  • Caffeine

  • Sugar

  • Salt (very low amounts)

  • Moldy food

In addition to feeding your dog raw food, here are a few other natural rearing methods:

  1. Sunlight in abundance and fresh air

  2. At least 2 hours of exercise daily (outside of kennel/enclosure)

  3. Let Puppy run around in clean grass (not concrete)

  4. Having puppies over 4 months of age fast once a month is healthy for them. You can have them fast one meal a month or a half day per week. This helps their body focus on detoxing and repair in order to keep them healthy. Similarly to people doing intermittent fasting.

  5. Depending on what you are feeding them, these supplements can also be helpful: multi-vitamin, organ meat supplement, vitamin D, vitamin B, prebiotic/probiotic, cod liver oil or another omega 3 source, vitamin C, E, and K, choline

Have fun with making your pup yummy, healthy food. It is always best to choose foods that are organic whenever possible to avoid toxins. Choosing foods from a farmers market can also be a helpful and often less expensive way to give them food and of course...start your own garden for you, your puppy, and your family. Get creative! We would love to see your concoctions that you come up with :) Tell us how your puppy enjoyed it too or the benefits you have seen from feeding your pet this way.
